This series of expressive portraits was a lot of fun to create. At the time I was living on the west coast, working in the entertainment industry, and experiencing horrific levels of physical pain that was not well managed, so these portraits embody all of these things. Because painting, drawing, creating are physical activities, that for me, are often out of reach when I am in a lot of pain, I’ve found that the best way for me to maintain my art practice (because I needed to) is to loosen up and just let go. I live my life in color, both as a rejection to the ways that carcerality and prisons erase color from view, but also because culturally, color is built into my psyche and my world.
